At a press conference today, the Ferguson police officer who shot Michael Brown was identified as Darren Wilson.

Ferguson Police Chief Thomas Jackson described Wilson as a six-year veteran of the force who had never been disciplined before. Jackson also said that officers were in the area on the day of the shooting responding to a “strong-arm robbery” at a nearby convenience store, but did not say if Brown was a suspect, and did not take questions.

The small Missouri community near St. Louis, and the nation at large, has been rocked this week following the shooting of the unarmed 18-year-old African American, reportedly in the back as he held his hands in the air. The ensuing protests and police crackdown have further raised questions about the militarization of America’s police force, and freedom of the press.
