Watch Melissa Harris-Perry’s Tribute To Unarmed Black Men Killed By Police
That’s the key word that MSNBC’s Melissa Harris-Perry uses when naming some of the African-American men who have been killed by police.
It’s a tribute that comes in the wake of the shooting death of 18-year-old Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri by what appears to be an overzealous cop.
Brown now joins the likes of Sean Bell, Oscar Grant, Aaron Campbell, Alonzo Ashley, Wendell Allen and a litany of others as black men who have been killed by police. What comes as a surprise is that from 2006 to 2012, a white police officer has killed a black person at least twice a week.
Twice a week.
Let that sink in for a minute as the tempers continue to flare in Ferguson. Protesters are growing unruly in some areas while others are doing their best to maintain the peace. Either way, these protests would have never happened had this not become such a common issue in the African American community. Had it been one or two black men, perhaps the angst wouldn’t be as thick. But when you consider the statistics, we must realize that something has to change in this country.
