Does Anyone Actually Want To See Floyd Mayweather & Manny Pacquiao Fight Anymore?

It’s 2014, and yet, people are still talking about the Floyd Mayweather/Manny Pacquiao fight that they’ve always wanted to see. Or are they?

Late this week, boxing promoter Bob Arum spoke with the San Francisco Chronicle and revealed that Showtime/CBS and HBO and actively discussing the possibility of Mayweather and Pacquiao fighting at least once—and maybe twice—next year. They haven’t come to an agreement about a fight yet, but there is an interest from both sides to get a fight on the schedule.

“Both networks want this fight to happen,” Arum said. “All signs seem to point to the fight happening early next year.”

Just one problem: There might not be a whole lot of interest in the fight at this point.

People still wonder what would happen if Mayweather and Pacquiao ever got into the ring together. But most people wonder about it in terms of what it would have been like if they were both in their primes. Today, Mayweather is 37 and, while he’s still undefeated, it’s likely that his best days are behind him. And Pacquiao, at 35, is not the same fighter that he was five years ago. So even if the two boxers did agree to a match, people wouldn’t get to see the two best boxers in the world go toe-to-toe. Instead, they’d get a match that would clearly be a money grab for the promoters involved. Because the sizzle that’s often associated with Mayweather/Pacquiao is all but gone today. It’s too late for them to take part in a match that truly matters.

Not that that will stop Showtime/CBS and HBO from trying to make it happen. There have been rumors surrounding this fight for so long now that it would probably end up making a fortune if it actually took place. But that doesn’t mean that it would be a good fight. And to be honest, we’re not even sure if we’d be interested in watching it anymore.

Would you want to see Mayweather fight Pacquiao? Or do you think it’s too late for this fight to happen?
