Is The NFL Really Going To Allow Ray Rice To Play Football Again One Day As Roger Goodell Just Suggested?

The last thing on Ray Rice‘s mind right now should be football. At the moment, he needs to focus on his wife, his family, and himself. He needs to get help for whatever caused him to violently attack his then-fiancée Janay Palmer in an elevator in an Atlantic City hotel and casino back in February and work on becoming a better person. And then, once those things are done and Rice’s life is back on track, he can think about playing football again.

That’s the message that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell seems to have for Rice right now. Goodell sat down with CBS This Morning co-host Norah O’Donnell yesterday and revealed a bunch of things about the NFL’s investigation of Rice’s case. He claimed that the league didn’t see the video that TMZ Sports released on Monday morning until TMZ Sports released it. He admitted that he fell short when he only suspended Rice for two games in February in light of what happened in the video. And he also said that, once things settle down and Rice does everything listed above, he might have a chance of coming back to the NFL and playing football again.

“I don’t rule that out,” he said. “He would have to make sure that we are fully confident that he is addressing this issue.”

How does that sit with you? We can’t really blame Goodell for answering the question that O’Donnell asked him about Rice’s future. But we think he probably would have been better off saying something like, “We’ll see how Ray handles himself in the future.” Because by basically saying that he does have a chance to get back into the NFL, he’s provided Rice with motivation to work on his issues. In reality, though, Rice should be forced to work on those issues without the Commissioner motivating him, because that’s the only way that anyone can be sure that Rice is working on his relationship with his wife and his anger issues because he wants to do it and not just because he’ll have an NFL career if he does it.

What do you think about what Roger Goodell had to say about Ray Rice on CBS This Morning? Should he have let the world know that Rice might play in the NFL again—or stayed quiet on the subject? Let us know.
