Why Did So Many Ravens Fans Decide To Wear Ray Rice Jerseys To Last Night’s “Thursday Night Football” Game?

At the moment, we wouldn’t blame Baltimore Ravens fans for being upset with Ray Rice. After seeing what he did to his then-fiancée Janay Palmer inside of an elevator in an Atlantic City hotel and casino back in February, we wouldn’t blame them for being pissed. In fact, if they built a big bonfire in Baltimore and threw all of their Ray Rice jerseys into it, we actually wouldn’t be surprised at all. But what we are surprised about right now is that, curiously, a lot of them aren’t doing that. Instead, they’re actually wearing their Ray Rice jerseys and showing support for him, despite what they saw in the video that TMZ Sports released earlier this week.

We know this because, last night during the first Thursday Night Football game of the 2014-15 NFL season on CBS, a lot of Ravens fans chose to show up at M&T Bank Stadium wearing their Rice jerseys. And they didn’t just wear because they were the only Ravens jerseys they had. They wore them to publicly support Rice and were very open about expressing their support when reporters questioned them as to why they were wearing the jerseys.

“I absolutely 100 percent support him,” one female Ravens fan said when asked about her Rice jersey. “It had nothing to do with his job. He should not have lost his job.”

Are these people crazy? If the TMZ Sports video of Rice hitting Palmer didn’t exist, we could maybe—maybe—understand why some people would still support him (though, for the record, the first video that TMZ Sports released a few months ago of Rice dragging Palmer out of an elevator was also awful). But the fact that so many Ravens fans, and female Ravens fans in particular, were wearing Rice jerseys last night is simply unacceptable.

It makes no sense to support Rice at this time and we are dumbfounded as to why so many Ravens fans thought it would be appropriate to wear their Rice jerseys last night. We hope the trend doesn’t continue during future Ravens games and we hope that those Ravens fans who wore their Rice jerseys last night think better of it before putting on their Rice jerseys next time.

Do you have a problem with so many Ravens fans wearing Ray Rice jerseys? Let us know.
