You Have To See The Ridiculous “Panda” Sneakers Metta World Peace Will Wear While Playing In China

Metta World Peace—a.k.a. “The Panda’s Friend”—is going to be playing basketball in the Chinese Basketball Association next season. He didn’t get much interest from any NBA teams this summer. So rather than sit by the phone and wait for a call, he decided to take his talents over to China, where he will entertain Chinese basketball fans with both his skills on the court and his entertaining personality off of it. It should be…something. And who knows? Maybe he’ll end up becoming just as popular in China as Stephon Marbury is.

One of the ways World Peace is going to try and get crowds on to his side right away is by wearing ridiculous pairs of sneakers during games—and then giving them to someone in the stands after games are over. The sneakers, which don’t appear to be branded (Nike, Reebok, and adidas weren’t interested?! Ha), feature a gigantic bear head on the top of them and either arms or ears on the sides. They don’t look particularly well made, but World Peace is hoping to win over Chinese fans with them.

“Before every game, I will be wearing the white or black shoes,” he told Courtside Access recently. “The top part of the shoe has a panda on it. I will be throwing it to a friend in the crowd. The person who catches it will be the Panda’s Friend of the day.”

Weird? Of course. For what it’s worth, the shoe doesn’t actually have a “panda” on it. It has a regular teddy bear’s head. And it also doesn’t appear as though these shoes are going to last for more than five minutes on the court without them falling apart. So it feels like World Peace might try handing out the sneakers for a game or two before ultimately finding a new way to entertain fans. But handing these sneakers out is worth a shot, and it’s exactly what we would expect from World Peace.

What do you think about World Peace’s plan to wear these during CBA games? Would you want a pair of them? Let us know.
