Lifetime has released the first official trailer for the upcoming Aaliyah biopic, Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B. The film has been dogged by controversy since the beginning due in part to the late singer’s family opposition to it.

In response to the negative feedback from Aaliyah’s family and fans, one of the film’s executive producers, talk show host Wendy Williams, defended the production last week during a visit to The View. She told the show’s hosts, “It’s the movie about Aaliyah, you know, the R&B singer who passed away in a plane crash. She was only 22 years old. If she had lived, goodness only knows what her career would have been like right now. But the plane went down. She had a brief marriage with R. Kelly, and in the movie we tell that story. We do it tastefully. The family is not happy that the movie is being done but we did it so tastefully. I think the family would be proud. We’re not throwing anybody under the bus but we are telling a story that, I don’t know about you, but I’ve always wanted to know. How did she get started? What did her father say when she brought home a 28-year-old man and she’s only 15 talking about ‘Daddy, I love him, we’re getting married’? What!? What!?”

Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B stars Alexandra Shipp as Aaliyah, Chattrisse Dolabaille as Missy Elliot, Izaak Smith as Timbaland, Elise Neal as Gladys Knight, and Anthony “Tony” Grant as Damon Dash. The movie premieres Saturday, November 15 at 8pm. Check out the trailer below, and let us know what you think by leaving a comment.
