Why Did Phil Jackson Call Spike Lee Out & Say That He Doesn’t Know Anything About Basketball?

Spike Lee is, without a doubt, the biggest New York Knicks fan on the planet right now. For the last two decades, Spike has sat courtside during just about every single Knicks game at Madison Square Garden and showed up both when the Knicks were good and when the Knicks were bad. And as a result of this, we think it’s safe to say that Spike knows a thing or two about basketball. He might not be the second coming of Red Auerbach or be qualified to serve as an NBA analyst, but Spike knows the game of basketball well. At least, we think he does.

Knicks new team president Phil Jackson isn’t so sure about that, though. He did an interview at The New Yorker Festival over this past weekend and revealed that he doesn’t think Spike knows anything about basketball. Spike might be directing a new documentary about the triangle offense for MSG Network. But in Phil’s eyes, Spike is nothing more than a fan.

“As most people know, Spike is an avid Knick fan that doesn’t know anything about basketball,” he said. “He knows how someone makes a shake and bake move and might dazzle the fans and make a shot.”

Jackson went on to say that the triangle offense isn’t that complicated, insinuating that Spike isn’t exactly solving a big mystery by putting together a film on the offense that he helped make famous. But did he really have to take a shot at Spike here? The guy is your team’s biggest fan and does have a working knowledge of the game of basketball. So to say that he “doesn’t know anything about basketball” seems like a slap in the face. And it’s a slap in the face that Spike doesn’t deserve. After all, he’s been there for the Knicks through the good times and the bad times. So why take shots at him now?

Do you think Phil Jackson went too far by saying that Spike Lee doesn’t know anything about basketball? Let us know.
