Is The 49ers Game Against The Saints Today A Must-Win Situation?

Last season, the San Francisco 49ers made it all the way to the NFC Championship Game and were thisclose to beating the Seattle Seahawks and going to the Super Bowl before Richard Sherman ruined their party. So when the Niners kicked off their 2014-15 NFL season with an easy win over the Dallas Cowboys, the thought was that they were going to be a Super Bowl contender once again this year. Their offense sputtered during the preseason at times. But they looked great against Dallas and appeared to be ready to dominate the NFC. However, over the last month, San Francisco has looked, dare we say, average and might not even be able to win their own division, the NFC West, let alone the NFC. They could even miss the NFL Playoffs altogether.

Last Sunday, the 49ers suffered a heartbreaking home loss to the St. Louis Rams that ended with quarterback Colin Kaepernick fumbling the football into the end zone on the 49ers’ final offensive play of the game. It moved them to 4-4 on the season. And it made this week’s game—a road contest against the New Orleans Saints—extra important. In fact, you could make the case that the 49ers have to win against the Saints in order to salvage their season. Because while they have several winnable games on their schedule after this week—they play the New York Giants next week before taking on the Washington Redskins the following week—they also still have two games against the Seahawks and games against the San Diego Chargers and Arizona Cardinals left on their schedule. So if they want to make the playoffs, they need to start winning games.

The 49ers also need to hope for the Cardinals and Seahawks to cool off. Arizona has the best record in the NFL right now and, while the Seahawks have struggled at times this season, Seattle is more than capable of running off a string of victories and burying the 49ers if they’re not careful. So San Francisco needs to combat that by getting some wins. And that starts with their game against the Saints today. They won’t be out of contention for the playoffs if they lose. But they certainly won’t like their chances of making another deep playoff run this season if they slip below .500 this week.
