‘Dumb and Dumber To’ Tops Box Office

Hey Harry!!! If you can believe it, sequel Dumb and Dumber To topped the box office this weekend with $38.1 million, twenty years after the original hit theaters.

As Variety notes, this is the best opening for star Jim Carrey since 2003′s Bruce Almighty, whose more recent films (Mr. Popper’s Penguins, I Love You Phillip Morris) have struggled. It also marks the best ever debut for directors The Farrelly Brothers, whose films include There’s Something About Mary and Me, Myself, and Irene.

The film beat out strong showings from second-week holdovers Big Hero 6, an animated adventure from Disney, and Interstellar, Christopher Nolan‘s sci-fi drama. Other films debuting this week included indie films playing on a handful of screens (Foxcatcher, The Homesman, Rosewater).

However, Dumb and Dumber To has not fared as well among critics. Stephen Whitty of the Newark Star-Ledger seemed to sum up the criticisms when he wrote, “The majority of it isn’t just dumb and dumber, or even crude and cruder. At nearly two hours, it’s just dull – and duller.”
