Obama Shoves Congressional Bill in SNL “Schoolhouse Rock” Spoof

Saturday Night Live waded into a political controversy last night when it showed President Barack Obama (played by Jay Pharaoh) shoving a congressional bill down the front steps of Congress.

The cold open sketch was a spook of Schoolhouse Rock’s famous “I’m Just a Bill” song, which featured a down-on-his luck bill on the steps of Congress, singing about how a bill becomes a law. But in the wake of President Obama’s executive order on immigration, the show introduced another character singing on the steps of Congress.

“I’m an executive order, and I pretty much just happen,” sings Bobby Moynihan, before taking a drag from a cigarette as the music cut off mid-phrase.

The sketch even lampoons the argument that many presidents have used executive orders; this one is shocked to discover that he grants legal status to five million immigrants, and not something small like creating a park.

The clip has gone viral, especially among the president’s critics, who say the action circumvents the law and is “dictatorial.”

The sketch also includes a jab at do-nothing congressional Republicans, when at the very beginning, the immigration bill points out that the Republicans have not actually created him.

What do you think of the sketch? Let us know in the comments below.
