Was Johnny Manziel Just Involved In Another Off-The-Field Incident That Will Hurt His Reputation?

Johnny Manziel isn’t getting any playing time for the Cleveland Browns this year. The Browns starting quarterback Brian Hoyer has done a great job for the team so far this season. So Johnny Football has been forced to sit on the bench, which means he shouldn’t be making many headlines right now. But Manziel is making headlines at the moment—and unfortunately for both him and the Browns, it’s for all the wrong reasons.

According to reports out of Cleveland, Manziel was allegedly involved in an altercation that took place in the wee hours on Saturday morning at a hotel in Cleveland. A Browns fan named Chris Gonos reportedly approached Manziel at The 9 hotel, said “I love you” to Manziel, and attempted to give him a hug. And when he did, someone who was with Manziel at the time allegedly punched Gonos in the face and ignited a brawl between Gonos and his friends and Manziel and the people he was with at the time.

Manziel’s agent Erik Burkhardt has come out and said that Manziel was actually a victim in the incident. In a statement he released late yesterday, he claimed that Manziel and his roommate went out to dinner with Manziel’s mother on Friday night before attempting to make their way up to the condo that Manziel rents at The 9. But when they did, Burkhardt claims Gonos approached him and started the incident in question. It’s a much different story than the one Gonos told police. But it’s the story that Manziel is going with now.

If that is what happened, then this might not end up being a big deal. It’s not a crime for Manziel to go out to eat with his roommate and his mother—and it’s not a crime for him to ask a fan to leave him alone. But the fact that the incident took place at around 2:30 in the morning on Saturday is a problem and isn’t sitting well with a lot of Browns fans, who think Manziel should have been home and in bed since Cleveland was scheduled to take a flight on Saturday morning to Atlanta for a game against the Falcons on Sunday. And this story is just one more example of why Manziel probably needed a year on the bench to learn the ropes with respects to the NFL.

Manziel needs to know that he can’t be walking around in the middle of the night in Cleveland and expect nothing bad to happen. He also needs to realize that, even if he was the victim on Saturday night, he’s the one who has the most to lose when incidents like this take place. It’s unfortunate and it means he’ll have to be a lot more cautious about where he goes and what time it is when he’s out. But he needs to take every measure possible to keep his name out of the news, especially for things that have nothing to do with football.

What do you think about Johnny Manziel’s latest transgression? Big deal? No big deal? Let us know.
