Should Derek Jeter Try To Buy The Marlins?

It’s the middle of December right now. So the absolute last thing on your mind is baseball. After all, the World Series ended more than a month ago and it’s freezing outside at the moment. So you’re probably thinking more about hockey, basketball, and, of course, football today. Not baseball. But there’s at least one reason why you should be thinking about it. And that one reason is…Derek Jeter.

Earlier this year, Jeter retired from Major League Baseball after spending two decades with the New York Yankees. His retirement tour was well documented, and it was very clear that baseball is really going to miss him. But according to some new rumors out of Florida, baseball fans might not miss Jeter for very long. Reason being, he’s reportedly interested in buying a team right now and he might be actively pursuing it.

Sports talk radio host Andy Slater took to Twitter last Tuesday and revealed that Jeter took a tour of the Miami Marlins‘ new stadium recently and met with Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria. Slater didn’t indicate what the two talked about. But the thought is that Jeter might have been speaking with Loria about his interest in buying the Marlins in the future. Back in the summertime, Jeter told New York Magazine that he’d love to own an MLB team one day. So people are putting two and two together right now and wondering if Jeter is thinking about staying involved in MLB moving forward by buying the Marlins.

At this point, Jeter’s interest in the Marlins is nothing more than a rumor. But it’s worth noting that his representatives haven’t shot down the rumor yet. And frankly, we like that the idea is even being brought up in the first place. Because even if Jeter isn’t actually interested in buying the Marlins, the rumor will force Jeter to at least think about the idea of buying an MLB team. And if he does ultimately end up buying one, it’ll be great for him, great for his fans, and, most of all, great for baseball.

What do you think about the idea of Derek Jeter buying an MLB team like the Marlins? Should he do it—or should he enjoy retirement for a few years before he jumps back into baseball?
