SNL Spoofs New Star Wars Trailer, Addresses Eric Garner

There’s a lot to make fun of in the new Star Wars trailer: that poor lightsaber design, a storm trooper who isn’t a clone of Jengo Fett, and perhaps the absence of any of the franchise’s familiar faces. But Saturday Night Live went a different route, and made fun of old people. SNL‘s “The Force Awakens” trailer featured an elderly Princess Leia trying to figure out how to work R2D2, Han being spacey, and Luke using the force to fill his pill holder.

The nation’s top weekly sketch series wouldn’t have been complete without addressing this week’s biggest story: the grand juries that declined to bring charges against the police officers who killed both Michael Brown in St. Louis and, even more shocking in light of the video evidence, Eric Garner on Staten Island. SNL did their best, but this is a tough topic to joke about (it literally left Jon Stewart speechless). The opening sketch featured Keenan Thompson as Al Sharpton discussing the issue, but was more an excuse to show Thompson’s oblivious and blustery Sharpton. And during the “Weekend Update” section, both hosts Michael Che and Colin Jost discussed the verdict, but with as much sad earnestness as laughs.

What did you think of this week’s SNL? Let us know in the comments below.
