I am one-hundred percent a fan of J. Cole, and it’s not only because he’s a fellow North Carolina native (although that helps). The 29-year-old rapper isn’t shy about speaking on the injustices of this world, and he recently participated in demonstrations here in NYC protesting a grand jury’s decision not to indict a New York City police officer in Eric Garner‘s death.

Wednesday night, Cole paid a visit to David Letterman, where he performed “Be Free,” a track inspired by the killing of Mike Brown in Ferguson. In the song, he raps, “Can you tell me why every time I step outside, I see my n-ggas die? Ooh, I’m letting you know that it ain’t no gun they make that can kill my soul. Oh, no. All we want to do is take the chains off.”

Check out Cole’s performance below.
