Is The Cowboys’ Season Going To Be Considered A Failure If They Lose To The Lions Today?

It’s been five years now since the Dallas Cowboys last played in the NFL Playoffs. Back in 2009, Tony Romo & Co. beat the Philadelphia Eagles 34-14 in the Wild Card round of the postseason before losing 34-3 to the Minnesota Vikings in the divisional playoff round. And since then, they haven’t just missed the playoffs; they’ve been downright mediocre. They went 6-10 in 2010 before enduring three straight 8-8 seasons. So Cowboys fans are understandably ecstatic about the fact that the Cowboys are going to take the field against the Detroit Lions today in the Wild Card playoffs. But will they be ecstatic after the game ends?

Because the game is in Dallas and because the Cowboys have a better all-around team than the Lions at this point, Cowboys fans should feel confident about their team heading into today’s game. But at the same time, a loss to the Lions could be devastating for the entire organization. Reason being, the Cowboys finally have a team that looks like it could make some real noise in the postseason. With Romo lining up under center, DeMarco Murray running the ball effectively, and the Dallas defense playing decent in recent weeks, the Cowboys have what it takes to win against Detroit and advance to the next round. So if somehow they don’t win the game, the Cowboys might look to make some big changes in the offseason.

A loss could possibly mean the end of head coach Jason Garrett‘s tenure in Dallas. It could also force owner Jerry Jones to reassess the team’s defense and to carefully consider how much money he pays star wide receiver Dez Bryant in the offseason, since his contract could likely prevent the Cowboys from obtaining much help on defense. And overall, a loss would saddle Romo with the “He can’t win big games!” tag for another year, which would no doubt put even more pressure on the Romo and the Cowboys to win next season. So if Dallas does lose today, it could actually be pretty catastrophic for the team.

That doesn’t mean that a loss would automatically make this season a failure for the Cowboys. But it does mean that this playoff game is the most important game that Dallas has played in five years. And they better be prepared to play like it.
