Are Off-The-Field Issues Going To Derail Johnny Manziel’s Career?

Johnny Manziel has a long, storied history when it comes to partying and having a good time. Ever since he first came onto the national scene during his freshman year at Texas A&M, major media outlets, sports blogs, and other publications have documented Manziel’s love for nightlife. He’s frequently been spotted at bars and clubs over the course of the last few years. And according to sources who spoke with ESPN.com at the end of the 2014-15 NFL season, Manziel even managed to get himself into trouble before one game late in the year by missing a meeting with a trainer after a night out in Cleveland. So it’s been pretty clear for quite some time now that Manziel needs to get his personal affairs in order. But who knew that he was going to need to go to rehab to do it?

Earlier today, Manziel’s adviser Brad Beckworth released a statement through ESPN.com revealing that Manziel is going to get professional help for an undisclosed personal issue. Beckworth didn’t specify what kind of help Manziel is going to get. But he did reference the fact that Manziel wants to become a better person during the NFL offseason.

“Johnny knows there are areas in which he needs to improve in order to be a better family member, friend, and teammate and he thought the offseason was the right time to take this step,” Beckworth told ESPN.com. “On behalf of Johnny and his family, we’re asking for privacy until he rejoins the team in Cleveland.”

There’s been no indication as far as how long Manziel is going to be away from the game of football getting treatment. And while the Browns did say that they will “fully support” him, they haven’t indicated how Manziel’s rehab stint will impact his standing with the team. But it’s safe to say that, if Manziel is taking this step, he has a serious problem and needs to get help. And he needs to get that help as soon as possible so that his off-the-field issues don’t derail his NFL career entirely and prevent him from playing football at a high level again.

It obviously might not seem like he’s taking a positive step in his life right now. But it’s good to see that Manziel and his team are being proactive and doing whatever they can to get him back on the right path. It sounds like it’s what he needs right now, so you can’t do anything but wish him the best and hope that he’s able to get his life together again.
