Why Are People Criticizing Kevin Durant For Making The NBA All-Star Team?

Even though he’s been injured for much of the 2014-15 NBA season, Oklahoma City Thunder forward Kevin Durant has still been plenty impressive this year. He’s averaging about 25 points, seven rebounds, and four assists per game so far this season. Plus, he’s one of the most popular players in the entire NBA. So it would seem strange if he wasn’t in the NBA All-Star Game this month, wouldn’t it?

We sure think so. He deserves to be in the game, even if it means leaving other stars like Portland Trail Blazers point guard Damian Lillard out. But over the last week or so, there have been quite a few people, including NBA analysts like Charles Barkley, who have argued against KD being named a reserve on the All-Star team. Their argument is that he hasn’t played enough to be an All-Star, so he should be required to wait until next year to take part in the festivities.

Durant himself doesn’t see it that way, though. He admits that he was a little bit surprised when he was named an All-Star—”I didn’t think I would make it,” he told reporters on Friday—but he also has a pretty good idea about why he was named to the team by the coaches in the NBA’s Western Conference.

“The coaches have to prepare for me a different way I guess when I’m in the lineup,” he said. “So I guess that respect got me in the game. But every year someone is going to get snubbed, every year someone is going to make it that you think shouldn’t make it. But that’s part of the game.”

He also added that, if someone else wants to take his place this year, they’re going to have to earn it. “Whoever want my spot can play me one-on-one for it,” he said.

And while Durant is obviously kidding, he makes a good point. He is one of the best basketball players in the world now—if not the best player in the world—so he deserves a spot in the All-Star Game. And if you don’t like it? Well, that’s just too bad. He’s going to be in the game anyway.
