Why Is Phil Jackson Making Jokes About The Current State Of The Knicks?
The New York Knicks are not in very good shape right now. They’re one of the worst teams in the entire NBA. Their superstar Carmelo Anthony is currently trying to work his way back from a knee injury. And unless the Knicks can land a franchise player in the 2015 NBA Draft, there’s not a whole lot of hope for the future. So the last thing that Knicks team president Phil Jackson should be doing is joking around right now. Er, right?
You would think so. But late this week, Jackson was asked why he wanted to come back and be a part of the Knicks organization. And he responded by saying that he didn’t really want to come back. Instead, he joked, he came back because his long-time girlfriend Jeanie Buss thought it’d be a good idea for him to “destroy a basketball team,” so he decided to do it.
“It’s not something I wanted to do,” he told reporters. “It’s something my partner said, ‘You’re sitting on all this information. Come on out and destroy a basketball team that you love.’ So that’s what I’ve done.”
And now, there are a lot of Knicks fans who are pissed-off at Jackson for saying what he said.
We imagine that the 2014-15 NBA season has been ridiculously rough on Jackson. He’s not used to losing the way the Knicks have lost so far this season. But he had to know that his “joke” wasn’t going to be received well. Maybe that’s why he made it—to light a fire up under the Knicks’ fan base, which has become pretty apathetic in recent months. But regardless of his motive, his “joke” is the latest misstep that he’s made in New York, and strangely enough, some Knicks fans are beginning to wonder whether Jackson is a solution to their problem or not. So he’s going to need to stop joking and start turning the Knicks franchise around ASAP. Otherwise, he might have a mutiny on his hands soon.
What did you think about Phil Jackson’s joke? Was it out of line—or should Knicks fans cut him some slack?
