Isn’t It Too Early To Call Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp A Butterfly A Classic?

Unless you have been living under a rock for the past 24 hours, you are well aware that Kendrick Lamar‘s To Pimp A Butterfly was released late Sunday evening, a full week ahead of schedule. And while the reaction has been great, it is also problematic. Reason being is that far too many have already deemed this a classic without a day passing.

The concept of classic is timeless, and determining that an album is timeless music after a few spins is irresponsible. But, of course, most of the people who took to Twitter just to shower the album with praise aren’t educated music critics, and that’s okay. But the instant gratification era has made it okay to certify an album as a classic and nobody bats a lash.

To be clear, that isn’t to say that Lamar’s new album isn’t good. It certainly is. However, it should be called great; and then let the classic term follow as time passes. Are you still listening to it a week from now? A month? A year? Just give it some time and allow the hype to wash away so you can judge it next to what appears to be a heavy slate of albums coming in the next few weeks.

In the interim, you can stream the album in its entirety below and judge for yourself.
