Should Jameis Winston Really Skip The 2015 NFL Draft?

In all likelihood, former Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston is going to be the first pick in the 2015 NFL Draft at the end of April. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is going to walk up to the podium at the draft and announce that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are selecting Winston with the first pick. But when he does, there’s a good chance that Winston won’t be there to walk up on stage and shake Goodell’s hand. Because according to Peter King of Monday Morning Quarterback, Winston is actually thinking about skipping the draft so that he can stay at home with his friends and family in Alabama. He isn’t 100 percent set on doing it just yet, but it does sound like he’s not all that interested in attending the draft.

We have to admit: That surprises us. On the one hand, Winston won’t be the first NFL draft prospect in history to skip out on the chance to take part in the draft. Plenty of other players have done it in the past. But none of them have been projected No. 1 overall picks like Winston. So none of them have passed up on the opportunity to make history. And with that in mind, we think it’s pretty amazing that Winston is considering not attending the draft. He’s worked so hard to get to where he’s at now. So why shouldn’t he enjoy it a little bit?

The truth is that whether Winston attends the draft or not, ESPN is going to show him and his reaction to getting drafted over and over and over again. They’ll have a film crew stationed inside his living room to capture his face when he goes No. 1. But if he ultimately decides not to show up for the draft, we’ll be surprised by it. This is a guy who is going to become the face of an NFL franchise soon, and he’s a guy who has been through a lot in recent years. So it just doesn’t seem right for him to skip the draft. And we hope he reconsiders before the draft begins.

What do you think about Jameis Winston skipping the draft? Should he be there, or should he stay at home and watch the draft along with the rest of us?
