Should The NFL Really Allow Teams To Start Challenging Bad Penalty Calls?

If you sit down and watch an NFL game for half an hour on a Sunday afternoon, there’s a pretty good chance that you’ll see at least one really bad penalty call. At this point, it’s a part of the game. Referees try their hardest to make the right call on every single play. But during the course of a game, they’re undoubtedly going to mess up on one or two plays and get a call wrong. It can be frustrating if your team suffers as a result of one of those calls. But there are also plenty of times when your team benefits from it. So there’s really no use in getting too worked up over it, right? It’s just the way things go in the NFL.

That might change sometime in the near future, though. Because next week, NFL owners are going to meet in Phoenix to discuss a handful of rule changes. And one of those changes involves what NFL teams can and cannot challenge. The Detroit Lions have made a proposal that would allow teams to challenge penalty calls on the field, just like they can currently challenge catches and fumbles. If they have a call made against them and they legitimately believe that that call was incorrect, they would then be able to throw a challenge flag and have a referee go take a look at a play and determine whether or not the correct call was made. It could potentially be a game-changing rule.

But is it necessary? And more importantly, will it actually help improve the game? We think it seems excessive, especially since some NFL games are already starting to drag on due to challenge flags. It also could become very controversial if referees are asked to overturn judgement calls on the field. For instance, you could probably call pass interference or holding on almost every single snap in the NFL. So are teams going to be throwing flags left and right to try and get a call to go their way? It could slow the game down significantly and make it unbearable to watch.

What do you think about the NFL allowing teams to challenge penalty calls made by referees? Would it help or hurt the league in the long run?
