Should Manny Pacquiao’s Trainer Freddie Roach Stop Talking About Floyd Mayweather’s Camp So Much?

There’s still more than a month to go before the Floyd Mayweather/Manny Pacquiao fight. But the war of words between the fighters’ respective camps has already started. And so far, it’s been a pretty one-sided affair. Because while Mayweather’s father Floyd Mayweather Sr. has made a few comments about Pacquiao’s camp, the majority of the punches have been thrown by Pacquiao’s trainer.

Since the fight was first announced, Freddie Roach has poked and prodded both Mayweather Jr. and Mayweather Sr. and let it be known that he was going to come out swinging. He’s questioned Mayweather Sr.’s ability to prepare Mayweather Jr. for the fight and called Mayweather Jr. out for getting knocked around by his sparring partners. And we can’t help but wonder whether he’s talking a little bit too much.

What Roach is doing is part of what makes professional boxing so great to begin with. There’s typically a long time between when a fight is announced and when it actually takes place. So boxers and their camps have plenty of time to talk trash and hype up a fight. But Roach is talking so much that he’s giving Mayweather a lot of extra motivation right now, motivation that he doesn’t necessarily need when you consider how dominant he’s been in the past. It’s also a little bit strange to hear Roach talking so much when you consider how quiet and soft-spoken Pacquiao has been thus far with regards to the fight. He’s obviously thrown a jab here and there at Mayweather. But Roach has gone above and beyond and tried to land blow after blow, even as Pacquiao has gone about his business.

We actually enjoy hearing Roach take shots at Mayweather and his camp. It makes the build-up for the fight that much better. But we sincerely hope that Pacquiao is ready to back up all the talking his trainer has been doing once he steps inside the ring. Otherwise, Roach is going to look like a fool for going so hard at Mayweather’s camp—and Mayweather is going to be the one who gets the last laugh.

What do you think about all the trash talking Freddie Roach has done over the last few weeks? Should Manny Pacquiao tell him to shut up?
