Is LeBron James Really Serving As A Player/Coach For The Cavaliers Right Now?

LeBron James is one of the best basketball players in the entire world right now. But is he also one of the best coaches on the planet?

It sure sounds like it. Earlier this week, ESPN reporter Brian Windhorst made an appearance on a Bill Simmons podcast and talked about LeBron’s current role with the Cleveland Cavaliers. He revealed that LeBron “didn’t really believe in” Cavaliers head coach David Blatt earlier this season and also said that LeBron is essentially serving as a player/coach at the moment. He obviously doesn’t do everything that a normal NBA head coach would do. But according to Windhorst, he does call plays for the Cavs—plays that Blatt then repeats to the rest of the team just to get everyone on the same page.

“The Princeton offense that David Blatt installed in the preseason, they just threw that out,” Windhorst said. “What typically happens—and this has been happening for three months now—what typically happens is LeBron will take the ball and he will call the play. David Blatt will see what play LeBron calls and he’ll repeat it to the team. That happens on a regular basis.”

Windhorst also added that LeBron thinks he knows what the team needs to be doing, which is why he has taken it upon himself to start calling plays.

“He has gotten himself to a place where he knows that, ‘These are my responsibilities, this is what I’m going to do and I’m going to try to get this team to a certain level.’ And David Blatt only figures into a part of that,” he said. “LeBron has sectioned off certain areas and said, ‘I’ve got to take care of these.’”

It’s a unique approach that LeBron is taking, one that could potentially cause some problems for the Cavaliers down the line. For instance, it’s one thing for LeBron to be barking out orders on a Monday night in Milwaukee in the middle of March. But it’s going to be a much different story when he’s trying to do it during Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Finals with the Cavaliers down one and in need of a basket. So it’ll be interesting to see how LeBron and Blatt’s relationship plays out between now and the end of the season.

Do you have a problem with LeBron calling plays for the Cavaliers?
