Why Did Connecticut Women’s Coach Geno Auriemma Just Criticize Men’s College Basketball So Harshly?

Men’s college basketball has definitely seen better days. Sure, it’s been fun to watch the 2015 NCAA Tournament. It’s also been fun to watch the Kentucky Wildcats try to put together a perfect 40-0 season. And if nothing else, it’s clear that the game is filled with potential NBA stars right now. But there was a lot of bad basketball played this season, specifically by teams who struggled to score points. There are a number of reasons for this—less urgency on the part of teams, more solid defensive efforts, etc.—but men’s teams definitely didn’t have their best season in terms of offense this year.

Even with that being said, though, did Connecticut women’s coach Geno Auriemma have to criticize men’s college basketball so harshly when he was asked about it earlier this week? Auriemma was asked for his opinion during a conference call with the national media. And he didn’t hold back when he took a series of shots at the men’s game for being so dull this season.

“As a spectator watching it, it’s a joke,” he said. “There’s only like 10 teams, you know, out of 25, that actually play the kind of game of basketball that you’d like to watch…The bottom line is, nobody can score. And they’ll tell you that it’s because of great defense, great scouting, a lot of teamwork. Nonsense, nonsense. College men’s basketball is so far behind the times, it’s unbelievable.”

Auriemma isn’t necessarily hating on men’s college basketball simply for the sake of hating. He brings up a few very valid points. But at the same time, those points are the same things that many other people say when they criticize women’s college basketball. So he of all people should recognize that criticism like that isn’t particularly helpful and realize that it doesn’t do much to help the game of basketball. So why did he seemingly go out of his way to try and make a mockery of men’s college hoops? It just felt unnecessary.

Do you think Geno Auriemma was out of line when he spoke up about men’s college basketball? Or do you think his criticism was warranted?
