Is Andrew Wiggins Playing Too Many Minutes For The Timberwolves?

The Minnesota Timberwolves are not going to make the NBA Playoffs this season. In fact, they’re more than 40 games behind the Golden State Warriors, the best team in the NBA‘s Western Conference, heading into the final two weeks of the season. So there’s really no reason for them to be playing their star rookie Andrew Wiggins as much as they are right now. They’d actually be better off sitting him and tanking. At this point, they’re jockeying for position in the race for a top pick in the 2015 NBA Draft, not worried about where they fall in the standings. So why bother playing Wiggins so much?

We’re not sure. But despite their current situation, the T’wolves are still playing Wiggins. A lot. He’s actually played so much—he’s averaging almost 36 minutes per game and has logged more than 2,600 minutes this season—that he has now played almost 500 minutes more than any other rookie in the league. And while it’s helping him put together some solid stats (he’s averaging 16.2 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 1.9 assists per game) and will likely land him the coveted Rookie of the Year trophy, it’s also taking a toll on his body and consistently putting him at risk for injury. So Minnesota should seriously consider shutting him down soon.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like they’re going to do it between now and the end of the season. In March, Wiggins averaged almost 39 minutes per game. It’s allowed him to get a ton of experience and has no doubt helped him improve as a player. It’s also something that he’ll be able to look back on this offseason when he’s finding what he needs to work on as a player. But because the T’wolves aren’t concerned with winning right now, it seems as though they should let him start sitting out more and ultimately save his energy for next season. There’s not many games left in this season anyway, but sitting him could reap benefits later and help him in the long run.

Do you think the Timberwolves are playing Andrew Wiggins too many minutes? Or do you think he should continue playing as much as possible?
