Would The Seahawks Actually Let Russell Wilson Walk After The 2015 NFL Season?

Russell Wilson has turned himself into a star with the Seattle Seahawks. He’s led the team to a Super Bowl. He’s become the vocal leader of the team. And above all else, he’s come to represent what the Seahawks are all about. It’s why he’s arguably the most important player on the entire team right now—and why the Seahawks are doing everything in their power to sign him to a contract extension this offseason. Er, or are they?

During a radio interview on Friday, Seahawks general manager John Schneider made some interesting remarks regarding Wilson. He said that, while Wilson is obviously a key part of the team, he’s not willing to sink too much money into his next contract if it’s going to hurt the team in the long run.

“Every negotiation is unique in and of itself and this is no different,” he said. “Ultimate team sport, he’s our quarterback, we’d love him to be our quarterback. But the thing is, we need to keep as many of these guys together as we possibly can.”

OK, so Schneider didn’t come right out and say that the Seahawks would be willing to let Wilson leave after his rookie contract is up following next season. But he did seem to allude to the fact that he doesn’t think keeping Wilson is essential. At least, it’s not essential if it comes at the expense of the rest of the team. So it sounds like Schneider is going to be very careful not to overpay Wilson at this point in his career since it could impact the Seahawks for years to come.

Does this mean the Seahawks won’t ultimately end up keeping Wilson? Of course not. We’d actually be willing to bet that Seattle will pay Wilson good money to stay with the team beyond next season. He’s become too important for them to just let him go. But at the same time, it’s becoming more and more clear that the Seahawks are going to play hard ball during negotiations with Wilson. And that could make things very interesting over the next year or so.

Do you think the Seahawks would ever let Wilson walk? Or are they bluffing right now?
