Should The NFL Suspend Tom Brady For His Alleged Role In #DeflateGate?

For the last four months, New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady has maintained that he didn’t have anything to do with the #DeflateGate scandal that took place back in January. The Indianapolis Colts picked off one of Brady’s passes during the AFC Championship Game and, according to reports, realized that it was underinflated. So they reportedly told the NFL about it, prompting the league to launch an investigation into who knew what about the deflated footballs that Brady & Co. were playing with. But ever since then, Brady has gone on the record time and time again to say that he didn’t have anything to do with #DeflateGate.

The NFL just revealed otherwise. They hired attorney Ted Wells to investigate the footballs that were used during the game. And while it took him nearly four months to get to the bottom of it, Wells just published a 243-page report about what he found. The most shocking thing that the report uncovered was that, according to Wells, Brady and two Patriots employees were responsible for the deflated footballs. In his report, Wells wrote that it was “more probable than not” that Brady and the employees—identified as Patriots locker room attendant Jim McNally and Patriots equipment assistant John Jastremski—were well aware of what they were doing when they prepared deflated footballs for the game against the Colts.

But the question remains: Now what? Even though Wells has ruled that Brady was in on #DeflateGate, there’s a good chance that Brady will maintain his innocence. But if the league is going to make a statement here, then they’re going to have to use Wells’ report to punish Brady. At the very least, they need to fine him for what he allegedly did. And if they really want to send a message, then they should suspend him for a game (or more) to show that they will not tolerate players trying to bend the rules to their advantage.

Either way, #DeflateGate has been a bad look for Brady and the Patriots and will impact their respective legacies for years to come. Because once again, the Patriots have gotten caught in a scandal and once again they’ve come out of it looking like cheaters.

Do you think Brady deserves to be suspended? Or should the league go light on him since there’s still some debate about how involved he was in #DeflateGate?
