Do We Need A “More Adult” Muppet Show?

The rumors have been confirmed: ABC has greenlit a new Muppet Show. But unlike the popular variety show of the 70′s (or the very short-lived show of the 90′s, natch), the new show will be a mockumentary in the style of The Office or Modern Family, and will focus on the Muppets personal lives.

A statement from ABC:

“The Muppets” return to prime time with a contemporary, documentary-style show that, for the first time ever, will explore the Muppets’ personal lives and relationships, both at home and at work, as well as romances, break-ups, achievements, disappointments, wants and desires; a more adult Muppet show, for kids of all ages.

Personally, as a lifelong Muppet fan, I’m very skeptical of this new direction. I don’t want to see them losing their silly edge and becoming too human; after all, Muppets aren’t people, they’re Muppets, that’s the whole point!

Then again, “romances, break-ups, achievements, disappointments, wants and desires” have always been a part of the Muppet world, especially their movies. So maybe this really won’t be as big a change as they are suggesting.

What do you think? Will you tune in for the new Muppet show?
