Mayweather-Pacquiao Destroys Live Gate & PPV Records

We already knew that Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao’s showdown was destined to break all kinds of records. But now that the numbers are in, you will probably be in awe at just how ridiculous they really are. According to a release sent by HBO, initial reports from distributors indicate that the event generated more than 4.4 million U.S. buys and more than $400 million in domestic pay-per-view revenue alone.

That crushes the previous record of $150 million in PPV revenue generated by Mayweather’s showdown with Canelo Alvarez in 2013 and the 2.48 million buys that were garnered from Mayweather’s 2008 fight with Oscar De La Hoya.

The welterweight world championship unification bout nearly doubled the previous record of 2.48 million buys generated by the Oscar De La Hoya vs. Floyd Mayweather boxing event in 2007 and nearly tripled the record $150 million in U.S. pay-per-view revenue generated by Mayweather vs. Canelo Alvarez in 2013.

The live gate receipts from the event that took place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena and featured a litany of celebrities paying top dollar for tickets annihilated the previous record of $20 million for Mayweather-Canelo. Mayweather-Pacquiao raked in more than $71 million in revenue for the May 2nd bout.

With the PPV numbers still rolling in, we’ll see exactly where this finishes, but wouldn’t these numbers suggest that there perhaps should be a rematch?
