The FBI has joined the investigation into a lethal Amtrak crash after NTSB investigators found evidence that an object may have struck the windshield of the train before the derailment. The cause of the crash, which killed eight people and was the deadliest in six years, is still undetermined; but the train was traveling over 100mph, more than twice the speed limit, in an area where it should have been slowing down.

The NTSB had it’s first interview with the train conductor, Brandon Bostian, whom they described as “extremely cooperative.” But Bostian says he does not remember anything from the moments preceding the crash.

An assistant conductor says that Bostian told another conductor over the radio that the Amtrak train had been struck by an object. The Philadelphia-area light rail system Septa has confirmed that one of their trains was struck just before the Amtrak crash, in the same area.
