John and Alicia Nash, whose lives and marriage were depicted in the Oscar-winning film A Beautiful Mind, died in a car crash on the New Jersey Turnpike on Saturday. He was 86, and she was 82.

The couple were returning from a trip to Norway, where Nash, one of the greatest mathematicians of the 20th century, was receiving the prestigious Abel Prize. Nash shared the 2001 Nobel Prize for mathematics for his groundbreaking work on game theory.

John Nash was born in West Virginia, and earned his PhD at Princeton. He married Alicia Lopez-Harrison de Larde in 1957.

In 1959, with Alicia pregnant, Nash began to show signs of mental illness. He eventually was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, and was institutionalized many times throughout his life. He and Alicia divorced in 1963.

But by the 70′s, the illness had subsided. Nash returned to mathematics and teaching at Princeton, where he would spend the remainder of his career. He and Alicia eventually reconciled, and remarried in 2001.

Their story was told in the Sylvia Nasar biography A Beautiful Mind, and 2001 film of the same name, directed by Ron Howard. In it, the couple was portrayed by Russell Crowe and Jennifer Connelly.
