Does LeBron James Deserve To Win The MVP Award If The Cavaliers Lose In The 2015 NBA Finals?

LeBron James has been nothing short of spectacular for the Cleveland Cavaliers during the 2015 NBA Finals. Even though he’s playing without his fellow superstars Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love and even though the Golden State Warriors have, on paper, a much better team than the Cavaliers, LeBron has willed his way to the basket time and time again and put the Cavaliers in position to win their first NBA title ever. Without LeBron, the Cavs definitely would have gotten swept by the Warriors, and there’s a good chance that Golden State would have done it rather decidedly. But thanks to LeBron, the Cavs still have a small chance to win the title heading into Game 6 of the Finals. So even if the Cavs lose, should LeBron win the Finals MVP award?

Fortunately, we don’t have to answer that question yet. As we just mentioned, the Cavs still have a chance to win the title and, if they do, LeBron will be, hands down, the Finals MVP. But if they lose, he still deserves some strong consideration. Reason being, he’s done everything for the Cavs during this series. He has scored seemingly at will. He has grabbed rebounds. He has assisted his teammates. He has recorded two triple-doubles so far. And he has done it all without much help from his teammates who, to their credit, are trying but not talented enough to keep up with the Warriors.

Despite all of this, it’d be extremely hard for LeBron to win the Finals MVP award if the Cavs lose. The Warriors don’t have a clear-cut MVP candidate on their roster right now, save for Steph Curry who won the regular season MVP award and, therefore, deserves consideration. But the Warriors have had a different guy step up in almost every game that they’ve won now, which will make the race for MVP a photo finish. Regardless of who gets it, though, it just wouldn’t feel right to give it to LeBron if his team lost. Yes, he’s been great during the Finals, but even he would probably admit that the MVP of the Finals can’t come from the losing team.

Do you think LeBron should win the Finals MVP award if his team loses?
