Is Kevin Love Going To Leave The Cavaliers In Free Agency?

On Wednesday afternoon, Kevin Love did exactly what a lot of people expected him to do this summer when he opted out of the final year of his current contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Love has talked all along about wanting to sign a long-term deal with the Cavs this summer. But because of how the 2014-15 NBA season went for Love—he struggled to fit into the Cavs’ lineup at times and ended his season by suffering a shoulder injury that required surgery—there are some people who think he might look around this summer and consider signing a deal elsewhere. So Cleveland fans and the Cavaliers themselves are on edge right now and wondering what Love’s opt-out will mean for them.

In all likelihood, Love is going to re-sign with the Cavs this summer and commit to spending the next five years with the Cavs. In a lot of ways, he would be crazy not to. Even without Love and Kyrie Irving in the lineup, LeBron James led the Cavs to the 2015 NBA Finals and very nearly led them to an NBA title. So it’s hard not to make the Cavs the favorite to win the title every year if LeBron, Irving, and Love are all healthy. And in that regard, it makes perfect sense for Love to sign a deal in Cleveland. Plus, he stands to make the most money in Cleveland.

It doesn’t seem like Love enjoyed his first year with the Cavs, though. He didn’t get the chance to shoot as much as he’s used to. He got thrown under the bus by LeBron on at least one occasion for not fitting in with his teammates better. And he spent the entire season under a microscope like never before. It was new territory for him, and he didn’t react to it particularly well. So it would be hard to blame him for looking around and trying to find the best opportunity possible.

Love is stuck in a tricky situation right now. If he leaves Cleveland, he’ll be diminishing his chances of winning a title anytime soon. But if he stays, he may put his happiness in jeopardy and risk spending five years playing for a team that he’s not fully invested in. So it’ll be interesting to see what he ultimately decides to do.

Do you think Kevin Love will be back with the Cavaliers next season, or do you think he’s going to leave Cleveland?
