A man in Maine was killed yesterday after setting off a fireworks mortar tube he had placed on his head. Devon Staples, 22 of Calais, reportedly died instantly due to the head injury. It is the first reported firework-related fatality since the state repealed a law banning the devices in March 2012.

According to a spokesperson for the Maine Department of Public Safety, Staples was celebrating the 4th of July at a friend’s house in the town in eastern Maine on the Canadian border. The group had been drinking.

The Bangor Daily News reports that fireworks sales in the state since legalization through May this year have totaled $20.3 million. (Most fireworks sales take place around the 4th of July, meaning the current numbers are likely much higher.)

Other incidents reported throughout the state included burns and eye injuries, and some property damage.
