Fans of iconic R&B group New Edition are some of the most diehard, loyal fans ever, and some of them are very apprehensive about the recent announcement about BET’s plans to bring their story to the small screen. Five of the group’s members, Ralph Tresvant, Michael Bivins, Ronnie DeVoe, Ricky Bell and Johnny Gill, will co-produce the project, but fans can’t help but think about Lifetime’s failed attempt at doing an Aaliyah biopic last year.

Recently, I caught up with New Edition founding member Michael Bivins for my column “The SCOOP”, and he told me that New Edition aren’t just producers on the project in name only, but will be very involved in every aspect of planning and shooting the N.E. biopic (which is the total opposite of what happened with the Aaliyah biopic where no one that knew Aaliyah was involved in the Lifetime production). He also addressed fans’ concern that Bobby Brown wasn’t mentioned in the press release announcing the project. Check out those highlights below.

ON BEING INVOLVED IN EVERY ASPECT OF THE NEW EDITION BIOPIC:

Nobody could tell the New Edition story without us because the story that we’re telling ain’t what was on television. You know, this isn’t the VH1 long form. This is the story – this is the stuff that only we know. So we all the way in it. We’re going to be involved in the movie like we’re involved with our concerts.

We have to make sure the person not only looks like, but feels right [casting]. And you want to do all that because you want to be there from the beginning, and that’s what it’s all about. Taking that time to make sure you’re in there. You don’t want to hear about it, you want to be about it.

ON THE ABSENCE OF BOBBY BROWN IN THE NEW EDITION BIOPIC PRESS RELEASE:

Whatever was in the press release, that’s really all of the information out there. As it goes, everybody will get more information, but, you know, the press release is all anybody talking about. So there’s no more to it, but I’ll just say this though, it’s hard to make a movie with five members in the group and four faces. So I don’t know what everybody in an uproar about – it’s going to be what it’s going to be. It’s going to be the truth at the end of the day. That’s what it’s going to be – that’s what makes it good. When you watch the movie, you’ll be able to answer your own questions.

ON THE SPECULATION SPARKED BY THE PRESS RELEASE ABOUT THEIR RELATIONSHIP WITH BOBBY BROWN:

“We just went to his daughter’s funeral – everything is good. That’s not a good rumor- that’s somebody that got too much time on their hands. We are all in each others cell phones; we can talk to each other when we want to – we do. We all went to the funeral, we supported, we walked in with the family, we sat with the family, we’re all from Boston – that’s how it’s going to be the whole way out. Whatever anybody’s thinking is going on in business, that’s somebody that’s trying to write an article that doesn’t know what they talking about. As far as personally, we good. We all good. We’re boys from Boston – we’re going to always be that.”
