After Phoenix residents were terrorized for weeks by a series of shootings along downtown Interstate 10, a suspect has been arrested and arraigned in court. Leslie Allen Merritt Jr., 21, said in court that he is “the wrong guy,” and that his firearm has been in a pawn shop for the past two months.

Merritt was arrested by a SWAT team at a Walmart in nearby Glendale, AZ on Friday. Police claim they have forensic evidence that links him to the first four shootings of the 11 that occurred from August 29 to September 10. No one was killed in any of the shootings; one injury was reported from a broken windshield.

Police connected Merritt with a 9mm gun they determined was used in some of the shootings, after it was pawned at an area shop. The shop owner thought the gun might have a connection to the shootings, and alerted the authorities.

The first four shootings occurred on August 29 and 30. Police have not ruled out the possibility of multiple shooters. An earlier person of interest was questioned and released.
