Are The Browns Making A Big Mistake By Sending Johnny Manziel Back To The Bench?

Even though he hasn’t had many opportunities to start for the Cleveland Browns, once-heralded quarterback Johnny Manziel has been, more or less, a bust for the team. When the Browns spent a first-round pick on Manziel last year, the expectation was that the former Heisman Trophy winner would come to Cleveland and help turn the tortured franchise’s future around. But so far, that just hasn’t been the case. Manziel has been nothing but a headache both on and off the field for the team. At least, he had been a headache until this past Sunday…

For the first time in his NFL career, Manziel actually looked like a promising quarterback when the Browns played against the Tennessee Titans. He didn’t throw for 300 yards or complete 25 passes. In fact, he managed just 172 passing yards on eight completions, hardly Pro Bowl stats. But he didn’t make any critical errors during the game, he threw a couple of nice deep balls to wide receiver Travis Benjamin, and, most importantly, the Browns won! It was a nice moment for Manziel and the franchise, which has invested so much into Manziel over the last year or so. But that moment was fleeting as, for whatever reason, the Browns announced on Wednesday that they will be taking Manziel out of the starting lineup this coming Sunday when they play the Oakland Raiders in favor of Josh McCown, who started Week 1 of the season against the New York Jets before leaving the game with a concussion.

It’s not entirely surprising that the Browns are making this move. After all, they did bring McCown in this offseason to serve as their stopgap QB while Manziel tries to transition into being an every week starter. But after what happened on Sunday, it seems like the Browns should stick with Manziel and see what happens. At this point, what’s the worst that can happen? Another losing season in Cleveland? If nothing else, it would show whether or not Manziel is a viable long-term option for the team.

The Browns have chosen not to make the most of the opportunity that they were given after last Sunday’s win, though, and unfortunately, that’s bad for both Manziel and the Browns fan base. Something tells us we haven’t seen the last of Manziel this season. But for now, he’s going to have to go back to the bench, right where he doesn’t belong.
