Singer Chris Brown may be forced to cancel Australian tour dates planned for December after the Australian government issued an official challenge to his visa application. Brown now has 28 days to provide evidence as to why he should be admitted to the country.

However, the odds seem slim that this will be effective; Australia’s Minister for Women Michaelia Cash said Thursday, “People need to understand — if you are going to commit domestic violence and then you want to travel around the world, there are going to be countries that say to you, ‘You cannot come in because you are not of the character that we expect in Australia.’”

Cash also said that in her previous role as an assistant minister for immigration, she had blocked a visa application for a sportsman. That person was later identified as boxer Floyd Mayweather, who has plead guilty to domestic abuse charges on several different occasions.

In 2009, Brown plead guilty to assault for beating and threatening to kill his then-girlfriend, Rihanna. He later spent three months in jail for violating probation.

Brown has previously been barred from entering the UK and Canada.
