Should The Rockets Consider Trading Dwight Howard?

The Houston Rockets have been one of the most disappointing teams in the NBA so far this season. Picked by many to contend for an NBA title in the tough Western Conference, James Harden, Dwight Howard, and the rest of the Rockets have struggled to play consistently this season. They have lost to some really bad teams, like the Brooklyn Nets, and they just haven’t looked like the same team that took the floor last season. They fired their head coach Kevin McHale early in the year to try and shake things up, but for the most part, they’ve continued to play just as poorly as they did prior to McHale’s firing. And now, it sounds like Howard might be unhappy with the way things are going for him in Houston.

When Howard joined the Rockets a few years ago and agreed to team up with Harden, the future for both of them looked bright. The thought was that they would have no problem contending for titles every year. But if you have watched the Rockets play this season, it’s clear that something is missing. So should the Rockets seriously consider trading Howard to try and inject a sense of urgency back into their team? They could surely land one or two key pieces in a trade and set themselves up for the future in the process, since Howard’s best days as an NBA player are likely behind him.

It probably wouldn’t be a bad idea for the Rockets to, at the very least, think about shopping Howard around. He has a player option on his contract for next season, but the belief is that he will opt out of it and become a free agent next summer. And if and when that happens, the Rockets could lose Howard and get nothing in exchange. So why not try and get something for him now, since it’s pretty clear that the Rockets probably won’t contend for a title this season unless something miraculous happens?

Whatever decision the Rockets make, they should make it quickly, because this team is underachieving in a major way right now. And a change of scenery for both Howard and the Rockets might be exactly what they need.
