Manhattan Crane Collapse Kills 1, Injures Several
The collapse of a massive construction crane in the downtown Manhattan neighborhood of Tribeca killed one person and injured several more on Friday morning.
David Wichs, 38, was a trader on his way to work. The Harvard graduate had emigrated from Prague as a teenager, and lived with his wife on the Upper West Side. He was killed instantly.
Miraculously, others sustained only minor injuries.
Sources say the construction crew was in the middle of its second attempt to lower and secure the crane, out of concern for high winds and incoming snow. Video of the incident shot from a nearby building shows the crane arm lowering slowly, but then plummeting to the ground.
The veteran crane operator is cooperating with police, and tested negative for alcohol on a Breathalyzer.
