A bitter cold front is sweeping New York, as Mayor Bill de Blasio urged residents to stay inside as much as possible.

Temperatures had already matched century-old lows as they hit 0°F on Sunday morning as they continued to dip further. Wind chills are reaching -20° in some suburban areas. Wind chills in Massachusetts could reach -35°F, with winds up to 50 mph.

“These temperatures can be life threatening — especially for seniors, infants and people with medical conditions,” de Blasio said.

Authorities are warning that exposed skin can allow frostbite and hypothermia to begin developing in as few as 15 minutes. Conditions are particular dangerous for the elderly, homeless, and pets.

Temperatures will remain low through Monday, with warmer weather and snow moving in Monday night. By mid-week, temperatures are expected to hit 50°F.
