At Sunday night’s debate in Flint, Michigan, Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders disagreed over whether gun manufacturers should be legally liable when their weapons are used in mass shooting. The moment highlighted one of the rare instances when Clinton can (and has) attacked Sanders from the left.

The question was posed by the parent of one of the victim’s of last month’s mass shooting in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Both candidates agreed on the need for expanded background checks. But Sanders stood by his opposition to hold manufacturers liable, unless “they understand that they’re selling guns into an area that it’s getting into the hands of criminals.”

In the past, Sanders has justified his stances on guns, saying he represents a largely rural state (Vermont) with different attitudes towards firearms.
