SNL Dedicates Entire Episode to Prince

Instead of running a planned rerun show this past weekend, Saturday Night Live aired an hour-long episode dedicated to the late music icon Prince. The show featured clips of his performances on the show, sketches depicting him, and commentary from SNL alum and current Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon.

“Other people may have been on the show more times or performed more frequently, but there was always something different about a Prince performance,” Fallon said. “It was special. It was an event. It was Prince.”

The episode kicked off with footage from Prince’s first performance on the show in 1981, when he was only 22 years old. The show also included never-before-seen footage of Prince’s impromptu performance from the after-party of SNL’s 40th anniversary show. Cast alums Maya Rudolph, Martin Short, Chris Rock, and Fallon, can be seen onstage next to Prince.

Also in the episode was a sampling of “The Prince Show,” a sketch featuring Fred Armisen as the bizarre artistic personality, plus Rudolph as co-host Beyonce (not to mention the real Robert De Niro).
