How Will Steph Curry Respond To Russell Westbrook Laughing At His Defense?

Steph Curry doesn’t seem like the kind of basketball player that you would want to make mad. He’s not a big guy, so you probably don’t have to worry about him getting physical with you, and he’s also not a tough guy, so you probably don’t have to worry about him throwing a cheap shot at you. But when he gets motivated out on the basketball court, he turns into a problem for opposing teams. He’s best known for hitting ridiculously tricky three-point shots, but Curry has also turned himself into a threat to drive to the basket and score almost at will. Even though he has a slight frame, Curry is a master of finding a way to put the ball into the hoop regardless of who is standing between him and the rim. It’s his preferred form of payback.

With that in mind, Russell Westbrook may have made a big mistake when he laughed at a reporter’s question about Curry’s defense following Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals. The reporter asked Westbrook’s teammate Kevin Durant if he thinks Curry is “underrated as a defender” based on a block and steal Curry made at the end of the Golden State Warriors’ 120-111 win against the Oklahoma City Thunder. KD eventually got around to answering the question—but not before Westbrook laughed and then tried to hide the smile on his face with his hand. It seems he found the idea of Curry playing good defense hilarious.

It wasn’t the worst thing in the world—as we mentioned, it’s not like Curry is going to come out in Game 6 and punch Westbrook in the face for what he said—but the Thunder were up 3-1 in the series and are now up 3-2. So the last thing Westbrook should be doing at the moment is poking the bear and giving Curry any extra motivation. He’s liable to come out and torch OKC for 40 or 50 points based solely on what Westbrook said about him. And if he does, the Warriors could very well win Game 6 and send the series back to Oakland for Game 7, in which case it could be Curry & Co. who are getting the last laugh.
