Why Don’t NBA Fans Criticize Steph Curry As Much As They Criticize LeBron James?

If LeBron James had only scored two points during the first half of Game 3 of the 2016 NBA Finals, what do you think NBA fans would have said about him? Chances are, it wouldn’t have been good. “2 points” probably would have been trending on Twitter for most of the second half of the game, and on sports radio shows on Thursday, everyone would have destroyed LeBron for putting up such a crappy performance during one of the biggest postseason games of his career. LeBron would have been crucified like LeBron always is whenever he fails to perform.

The same can’t be said for Steph Curry. Curry did have two points during the first half of Game 3, and truth be told, those two points came off a wide-open layup attempt that he lucked up on. Outside of that shot, he couldn’t hit the bottom of the basket, and he struggled to live up to the unanimous NBA MVP award he won in May.  But while Curry did face some criticism after his 2-point performance, he didn’t catch nearly as much heat as LeBron would have if he had done the same exact thing.

Why is that? Part of it is that there are just a lot of NBA fans who don’t like LeBron. Whether they’re still hung up on “The Decision” or they just don’t like LeBron because he’s one of the best basketball players of all time, there are going to be people who hate him for any number of reasons. And those people are going to stand up and jeer him every chance they can. But given the fact that Curry is turning into one of the best players on the planet, you would think that his haters would be coming out of the woodwork, too.

If we had to guess, they will come. Soon. Already, you’re seeing more people criticize Curry than you have in the past. The backlash against him wasn’t immediate following Game 3, but there were more people questioning him than in recent years. But as long as LeBron is still around, he will always receive more hate than just about any other player in the league. Curry might one day be regarded as a better player than LeBron, but he’ll never take that crown from him.
