A Virginia tourist had his foot almost completely severed after stepping on some kind of explosive device in Central Park on Sunday afternoon. Police are investigating the incident, but it does not seem to be connected to terrorism.

Graphic photos show a white male in his twenties or thirties lying on the ground, with what is visible of his foot turning the wrong way. He was taken to Bellevue Hospital.

With the 4th of July just a day away, it seems likely the man just had the misfortune of stepping on a stray firework, which are illegal in New York City (aside from professional displays).

But tensions are running high less than a month after the terrorist hate crime in Orlando that killed 49, making it the deadliest mass shooting in US history. And just yesterday, over 120 people were killed and scores more injured in explosions in Baghdad; Islamic State has taken responsibility for that attack.

The Central Park blast also occurred just blocks from where the memorial service for Nobel laureate and Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel was taking place.
