Simon Pegg Responds to George Takei Over Gay Sulu

To the surprise of many, actor and activist George Takei disapproved of the recent announcement that the character Hiraku Sulu will have a same-sex partner in the upcoming film Star Trek Beyond. The film’s stars and writers are now responding that, as much as they admire and respect Takei, they are confident this is the right move.

“I have huge love and respect for George Takei, his heart, courage and humor are an inspiration,” said Simon Pegg, according to the Hollywood Reporter. “However, with regards to his thoughts on our Sulu, I must respectfully disagree with him.”

Pegg stars as Scotty in the current incarnation of the franchise, and cowrote Beyond.

Takei played Sulu in the original series. He came out publicly as gay in 2005 after then-Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed same-sex marriage legislation in California.

Actor John Cho, who plays Sulu in the current films, first told new outlets last week that Sulu would be gay. Takei later stated that he was very happy to see a gay character in the film’s universe, but wanted it to be a new character, not a character with a pre-existing history and backstory. Takei said this defied the original vision of series creator Gene Roddenberry.

Pegg responded that introducing a new character who is gay would make that character defined by their sexuality; and that gay characters were probably only excluded from the original Star Trek universe due to prejudices at the time during the 1960s.

Takei also said he did not like the idea that Sulu had been closeted; Pegg responded that this Sulu had never been closeted, his sexuality had just not come up before.
