The US has taken home gold in the very first medal event of the Rio 2016 Olympics, thanks to 19-year-old Virginia “Ginny” Thrasher. The West Virginia University freshman placed first in the the women’s 10m air rifle event.

Thrasher beat two Chinese Olympic gold medalists, Du Li and Yi Siling, to clinch victory. She is the first American woman to medal in the event since the 2000 games in Sydney, when shooter Nancy Johnson won gold.

The Springfield, VA native entered the sport just five years ago, saying she was inspired by a hunting trip with her family. Up to that point, she had been pursuing Olympic figure skating.
