Steve Rogers Is No Longer Captain America

It turns out that the big fight at the end of Captain America: Civil War was more than just Cap being dramatic: Directors Joe and Anthony Russo confirmed this week the scene literally represented Steve Rogers shedding the identity of Captain America in the MCU.

The confirmation came during an interview with The Huffington Post:

“I think him dropping that shield is him letting go of that identity,” said Joe. “[It’s] him admitting that certainly the identity of Captain America was in conflict with the very personal choice that he was making.”

The writers of the next Avengers film had previously confirmed that Rogers would still play an integral role in the team, as supervillain Thanos is about to make contact. (Also, I doubt the multi-billion dollar property wanted to lose one of their biggest stars just yet.)
Rogers may just be Rogers, but there is precedent for this situation: Following the Watergate scandal, Marvel comics featured an arc where Rogers became disillusioned with the government and assumed the identity Nomad.
